Supporters of Pas and other opposition parties and voters who were disappointed with the performance of the Umno-led Barisan Nasional Government are now waiting to teach Umno a lesson. Batu Talam provides a golden opportunity for them to send Umno a message, that the rakyat finally realize that the party no longer take care of the interest of the people.
The voters in general were very upset with the “Barang Naik” Govt which knows nothing better than raisng prices of petrol, diesel, gas, electricity, water, “cukai pintu” and toll. They will certainly make use of the votes in their hands to punish the BN candidate.
Even the former PM TDM were saying that the Batu Talam battle will be an interesting one to watch. He said voters who think the BN govt was not performing could cast their votes for the opposition. This battle will be useful to gauge the popularity of the current regime after a series of serious mistakes and unreasonable decisions.
There was a rumour in town that Pas may be opted to stay out of the contest. If the rumour turns out to be true, it will come as a big blow to all the supporters of Pas and other opposition parties. No one should underestimate the repercussions and negative impact of such a decision. The BN leaders will have a field day right up to the next general elections. They will certainly claim that (using their controlled media like newspapers, radio and television stations) Pas and other opposition parties have “chicken out” because they know pretty well that the rakyat were not with them. They would claim that Pas has no answers for the development plans and policies of the Barisan Nasional. They may even claim that Pas stays out of the race because the party has no confidence in even keeping their election deposit. And It’s foregone conclusion that whatever reasons given by Pas (for not fighting the by-election) would be distorted or black-out by the mainstream newspapers, radio and television.
